Cycling & Walking

In Thanet big skies beckon you to pull on your boots, or hop on your bike. Stunning sunsets, a gorgeous shoreline and superb trails equal year-round, al fresco explorations and fun.

The big-name draw is the Viking Coastal Trail. This don't-miss, 32-mile (51.4km) cycling and walking route circles the Isle, past spectacular chalk cliffs and along quiet lanes taking in the Turner Contemporary, Pugin's Grange, Minster Abbey and the coast path from Pegwell Bay to Cold Harbour, along the way.

Throughout the Isle a network of footpaths trace trails alongside sumptuous scenery, intimate landscapes and welcoming pubs. Discover Thanet's history and culture as you stroll. In Ramsgate the self-guided Pugin Town Trail profiles the exquisite buildings designed by the famous architect and his family. Meanwhile, in the town there are three new walking routes - Active Ramsgate. The Margate Heritage Trail reveals that resort’s history, threading past locations and attractions rich in reminders of days gone by.

The 4-mile (6.4km) Turner and Dickens Walk winds from Margate sites linked to the artist JMW Turner, to the places in Broadstairs associated with writer Charles Dickens - providing revealing insights into the lives and loves of the painter and the novelist.

Once in the resort, the Broadstairs Town trail is a self-guided walk that will delight history detectives, while the illustrated boards dotted around provide more clues to the resort’s past.

On a St. Peter’s Village Tour, a colourful cast of costumed characters brings the past vividly to life. You could join one of the entertaining trails delivered by Ramsgate Costumed Walks, while events run by History Walkers Margate lift the lid on the fascinating heritage of the town.

Organised walking on the Kent coast has never been so well run

It’s a brave person who says they've seen all that Ramsgate and the surrounding area has to offer. Steeped in over 300 years of history and blessed with some truly remarkable architecture and natural wildlife - not to mention the only ‘Royal’ harbour in the UK - there is a great deal to discover, experience and enjoy.

The Active Ramsgate programme includes three carefully prepared new routes on the Kent coast that have been created to help walkers experience as much of the attractions as possible – as easily as possible.

“There’s nothing I like better than a weekend by the coast, walking, biking, relaxing.”

Nicholas Crane, Presenter of the BBC Coast series

Three new walks on the Kent coast you can view online today:

1 - The Contra Trail - Ramsgate to Pegwell Bay

A Royal Harbour with the common touch. An English monument to a Viking invasion. A nature reserve you’ll want to shout about. Whatever you think you know about the South East coast, get ready to think again, because this is a route that’s brimming with fascinating contradictions.

Distance: 6.1 miles (9.8km) one-way including Nature Reserve loop - allow 3 hours

2 - Sea It All - Ramsgate to Broadstairs

If you enjoy the sea, you will love this coast hugging, cliff topping, café cruising circuit from Active Ramsgate. Like all the trails in the programme, this route goes the extra mile to delight and surprise. From the beautiful Italian Gardens to the breath taking views across Viking Bay, every step leads to something special you can enjoy.

Distance: 5 miles (8km) circular - allow 2.5 hours for the circular and 1.5 hours one way

3 - Ramsgate Town Rounders - Regency, Royal & Riviera

Walking doesn’t have to be all compasses and yomps across the countryside. In fact, with a little imagination and the right routes, a stroll through an historic town like Ramsgate can be just as satisfying. With two circuits, numerous attractions and an impressive list of discount partner cafés, bars, shops and places of interest to explore, Town Rounders is definitely a path worth following.

Distance: Loop 1 - 1.4 miles (2.3km) - allow 45 minutes; Loop 2 - 2 miles (3.2km) - allow 1 hour
