Removing Smells from Washing Machines

Things You Will Need for Removing Smells from a Washing Machine

  • Bleach
  • Vinegar
  • Bucket
  • Sponge
  • Run your machine's full wash cycle at the hottest cycle and 4 cups of bleach. Bleach kills mold and will begin breaking down the soapy residue.
  • Run your machine again with hot water and 4 cups of vinegar. Vinegar dissolves the soap scum from inside the wash tub.
  • Fill a bucket with a mixture of half hot water and half distilled vinegar.
  • Scrub around the top of the wash tub and underneath the overhanging area of the washing machine with a sponge. Soap and water splash onto these surfaces, but are not consistently washed away.
  • Leave the lid of the washing machine open to completely dry out the washing.
  • Repeat this monthly.
